The Ministry of Education and Higher Education condemned the Israeli occupation’s attack on the campus of the Islamic University of Gaza on Sunday, which resulted in the martyrdom of three university staff members and left several students injured, some in critical condition.
The Ministry extended its condolences to the families of the martyrs, praying for God’s mercy upon them and a speedy recovery for the injured. It stressed that the occupation’s continued attacks on higher education in Gaza, including the targeting of the remaining university buildings, reveal its criminal intent to disrupt the educational process. Despite the challenges and the devastating consequences of the genocidal war waged by the occupation, which continues to this day, the educational process continues with unwavering determination.
Against this backdrop, the Ministry called on humanitarian, human rights and media institutions to take concrete and serious action to put an end to the occupation and its ongoing aggression against Palestine’s education system. While Gaza’s universities are subjected to systematic bombardment, higher education institutions in the northern governorates of the West Bank continue to face killings, arrests and military incursions, as well as restrictions on students’ access to their educational institutions. These violations constitute a flagrant breach of international conventions and norms that guarantee the protection of educational institutions and the right to education.
